Generate a passphrase to see strength
Pronounceable passwords trade some entropy for ease of recall. Add digits or a symbol to push the strength back up.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a pronounceable password?
A password built by alternating consonants and vowels so the result can be read aloud (e.g. pelitora). Easier to dictate, transcribe, or remember than a fully random string.
Are pronounceable passwords secure?
Less secure than fully random strings of the same length because the pool of valid characters at each position is smaller. They're fine for moderate-stakes accounts, especially with appended digits and a symbol; for high-value accounts prefer a fully random password.
How does the consonant–vowel pattern work?
Each pattern letter selects a class of characters: C = consonant, V = vowel. The pattern is repeated to reach the target length. Repeating CVCV three times produces an eight-character pronounceable word.
Pronounceable vs passphrase: which is more memorable?
Passphrases (four random English words) tend to be easier to recall because the brain anchors on real words. Pronounceable passwords are easier to spell out loud over the phone. Pick the one that matches how you'll use the password.
