A Fortnite account is really an Epic Games account, and it can hold years of purchased skins, V-Bucks, Battle Passes and your Epic Games Store library. Stolen accounts with rare cosmetics are resold, so attackers use "free V-Bucks" pages, fake giveaways on social media and passwords reused from older game breaches to break in.
Use a password of at least 14 characters that you do not use anywhere else, and keep it out of reach of friends, even if they offer to play on your account or "level it up" for you. If you play on a console and have to type the password with a controller, a passphrase of a few random words is much easier to enter than a jumble of symbols and still strong.
Epic Games strongly encourages two-factor authentication: you need it to send gifts in the Item Shop and to take part in competitive events. Turn it on in your Epic account's Password and Security settings, and choose an authenticator app if you can. Epic also shows recent sign-ins, so you can spot a login from a device you do not own.
